It’s been a long winter for Marylanders  —Gov. O’Malley

Gov. O’Malley declared a state of emergency in Maryland as forecasters predicted up to 10 inches of snow could blanket much of the state.

“It’s been a long winter for many Maryland families. With the polar vortex, a bad ice storm and several snow storms already this year, it’s incredibly important for all Marylanders to remain vigilant and find smart ways to safely conserve energy,” said O’Malley.

Multiple Warnings, Watch and Advisories

Ice Storm Warnings and freezing rain advisories are in effect for portions of Georgia and South Carolina, and a very small section of southern Louisiana/Mississippi, said NWS.

Winter storm warnings are in effect from eastern Texas eastward across the northern tier of southeastern states and northward into the mid-Atlantic.

States of Emergency Declared for 7  Additional States

Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have declared States of Emergency due to the severe ice storm. More states are expected to follow suit.

Hundreds of schools and government offices were ordered closed along the storm path from Texas to North Carolina.

“This is not the storm we had two weeks ago, where we were playing in the snow and building snowmen. This is an ice storm,” said Gov Haley, as she declared a State of Emergency for South Carolina.

Thousands of flight were canceled or delayed on Tuesday and the trend is expected to continue through weekend.

A major winter storm will impact locations from Texas to the Southeast Coast on Tuesday before it moves up the Eastern Seaboard on Wednesday with heavy snow, freezing rain, and heavy rain…

Federal Emergency Disaster Declared for the State of Georgia

The White House has declared a federal emergency in the State of Georgia resulting from a severe winter storm beginning on February 10, 2014, and continuing.

The emergency disaster declaration will provide federal disaster relief to “lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe” in the counties of Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Cobb, Dade, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Elbert, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Franklin, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Haralson, Hart, Jackson, Lincoln, Lumpkin, Madison, Murray, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walker, Walton, White, Whitfield, and Wilkes.

Energy Emergency

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) extended on Wednesday the regional States of Emergency Declarations, Waivers, Exemptions & Permits for transporting propane throughout the United States.

A total of at least 38 states and District of Columbia are currently impacted by shortages of propane and other heating fuels.

States covered by the emergency declarations include:

• Western Service Center: North Dakota and South Dakota
• Southern Service Center: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee
• Eastern Service Center: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia
• Midwestern Service Center: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin

Storm expected to 10 inches of snow on much of VA Wednesday night – Thursday

Gov. McAuliffe declared a state of emergency today in response  to the major snow storm that is forecast to hit the Commonwealth starting Wednesday night.

“Now is the time for Virginia to get ready for this storm,” said  McAuliffe. “This state of emergency declaration will empower the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Department of Transportation, the Virginia National Guard, and our electric and cable utilities to prepare for a storm that is predicted to create power outages and significant travel challenges across the Commonwealth over the next few days.”

More than 2 inches of ice could cover much of U.S. South by Thursday

The deadly storm, which has claimed at least 6 lives so far, dumped  more than 6 inches of snow in north Georgia on Tuesday, with another 9 inches forecast by early Thursday, according to NWS.

“Red Warning” Issued for UK Hurricane Force Winds

Massive Storm Battering Ireland and UK with Torrential Rains and Hurricane-Force Winds

UK Met Office has issued a ‘Red Warning’ for hurricane force winds exceeding 160 km/hr, as a massive storm system barrels into Ireland and UK.

This is the first “red warning” issued by the UK Met this winter. It mean “danger to life” with widespread destruction/damage expected.

Wind gusts of up to 180 km/hr have battered the coast of southern Ireland, and gusts of 150 km/hr were recorded in South Wales.

In the counties of Devon and Cornwall, wind gusts of up to 155 km/hr have uprooted scores of trees and brought down power cables.

Meantime, southern England is bracing for more than a month of rain in the next few days.

During this afternoon a swathe of exceptionally strong winds is expected to affect western parts of Wales and then some northwestern parts of England this evening, particularly in coastal areas. Winds are expected to gust 80 mph widely and possibly reach 100 mph in the most exposed locations in west and northwest Wales.

Winds of this strength can cause widespread structural damage, bringing down trees and also leading to loss of power supplies. In addition, large waves are likely to affect some coasts. The public should take action to alter their travel arrangements during this spell of storm force winds.

Chief Forecaster’s Assessment

A vigorous area of low pressure is expected to move northeastwards across Ireland and southern Scotland this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds are likely to develop along the southern flank of this area of low pressure, especially in coastal locations.

Coastal areas of west Wales and northwest England are likely to bear the brunt as southwesterly (later westerly) winds widely gust to 80 mph and possibly 100 mph in the most exposed locations. The core of strongest winds will then affect parts of the coast of north Wales and northwest England early evening with peak gusts of 85 mph.
