– Arabia Report # 33 –
Saudi regime has launched a brutal crackdown on Awamia town in Eastern Province of al-Qatif, killing or wounding “many people,” according to social media reports.
A new wave of tensions has been rising since early May, when the regime began its controversial destruction of the al-Masoura neighborhood, claiming it was a hideout for militants which it accused of attacking its mercenary forces.

– Arabia Report # 32 –
Background:
Al-Awamiyah, also Awamia, is an ancient town [population of about 35,000] overlooking the Persian Gulf, in the northern end of the oasis of Al-Qatif, Saudi Arabia.
The town has been put under siege by the Saudi govt mercenary forces since May 2017. Residents are not allowed to enter or leave, as the government mercenaries indiscriminately shell the neighborhoods with artillery fire and snipers shooting residents. Dozens of Shia civilians, including several children, one a 2 year-old child, have been killed. The Saudi government claims it is fighting terrorists (!)
“On Friday, 28 July, the Saudi authorities announced that the remaining residents of the town of Awamiyah, estimated to be around 35,000, must leave the town within four hours. Intermediaries relayed the authorities’ directives and informed local residents that they should leave the town through two specific exits and carry white flags as they do so,” a report said.
“In the past two days, a massive military build-up has been reported at the outskirts of the town as the military forces stationed inside the town escalated their use of excessive force against the town’s residents. Previously, the authorities had ordered the Taraji sports club to evacuate the Amir Nayef Sport City stadium, located on the outskirts of al-Qatif, which they since have used to station newly brought-in military equipment and personnel, reported to be that of the Saudi Arabian National Guard.”

Mongolia has suspended grain exports as a severe drought plagues more than 30 percent of its agricultural land, with temperatures reaching record levels, according to authorities.
The drought follows a severe winter, with a dzud affecting much of the country.
“With nearly a third of the population made up of herders, the autumn harvest is crucial to the Mongolian economy,” said a report.
Severe drought has also impacted Inner Mongolia, damaging crop yields and causing economic losses.
“According to the regional civil affairs department, Inner Mongolia has seen less rainfall and higher temperatures than normal this year. Since the beginning of July, more than half of the region has experienced temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. In the central and western areas, temperatures at 17 monitored sites have exceeded 35 degrees Celsius,” a report said.
As of July 14, more than four million people in 10 cities were affected by the drought, with at least two million requiring disaster relief. “About 2.7 million hectares of crops and 34.3 million hectares of grassland have been affected, leading to a direct economic loss of 5 billion yuan (737 million U.S. dollars).”

Ministry of Health (MoH) Sri Lanka has reported an increase in the number of dengue cases in the country this year. As many as 85,000 dengue cases, including 250 deaths, have been reported by MoH so far this year (to July 7, 2017). The number of cases this year has reportedly increased by 4.3 times more than the average number of cases for the same period between 2010 and 2016, said WHO.
“The current dengue fever outbreak occurs in a context of massive heavy rains and flooding and is currently affecting 15 out of 25 districts in Sri Lanka where almost 600,000 people have been affected. Heavy monsoon rains, public failure to clear rain-soaked garbage, standing water pools and other potential breeding grounds for mosquito larvae attribute to the higher number of cases reported in urban and suburban areas.”
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). Infection with one serotype provides long-term immunity to the homologous serotype but not to the other serotypes; secondary infections put people at greater risk for severe dengue fever and dengue shock syndrome.
Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the vectors widely adapted to urban and suburban environments. Dengue fever is endemic in Sri Lanka, and occurs every year, usually soon after rainfall is optimal for mosquito breeding. However DENV-2 has been identified only in low numbers since 2009 and is reportedly over 50% of current specimens which have been serotyped.
The current dengue epidemic is likely to have repercussions on public health in Sri Lanka.

– UK Report # 39 –
Background Summary:
UK approved £283m of arms sales to Saudis after airstrike on Yemen funeral
“The British government approved £283m of arms sales to Saudi Arabia in the six months after a Saudi airstrike on a funeral that killed scores of people and was criticised [sic] by the UN, figures reveal.
“The airstrike, on 8 October 2016, hit a funeral hall in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, killing 140 people and injuring hundreds more, in one of the bloodiest attacks in the two-year Saudi-led campaign in Yemen.”
The World Health Organization has recorded 1,828 deaths from cholera since the outbreak in April, one of the largest outbreaks since records began in 1949.
Some 360,000 suspected cholera cases have been recorded in just three months since the outbreak started in April, making the outbreak the largest ever recorded in any country in a single year since records began in 1949.
About 20 million people need humanitarian assistance across Yemen, while three and a half million have fled their homes since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict in September 2014.
The war has pushed the country to the verge of famine
“It has precipitated a crisis which has left 7 million people on the brink of starvation,” said Oxfam.
“Those countries providing the arms and military support, such as the US and the UK, are fueling a war that is causing wide-spread suffering and tipping a whole nation towards a catastrophe. It is hard to imagine how much more Yemen can take before it collapses entirely.”
“In 2016, Saudi Arabia spent nearly $3 billion on arms from the world’s major arms exporters.”

Seven of the nine departments in the southern French region of Provence are experiencing “exceptional threat” of forest fires and have been placed on maximum alert. The other two departments, Var and the neighboring Bouches-du-Rhône, are currently on “very severe” alert.
French Grape Harvest
Meanwhile, French grape harvest is expected to drop to a historic low, this year, according to the agriculture ministry.
“At 37.6 million hectolitres the 2017 harvest is set to come in 17% lower than in 2016, and 16% below the average of the past five years.”
Very low rainfall in Germany has led to low water levels on the Rhine and Danube rivers, preventing cargo ships from being fully loaded.
Dry weather is also impacting rivers in Switzerland.
