Australia Approves Great Barrier Reef Dredge Dumping

Posted by feww on January 31, 2014

CRIMES AGAINST NATURE
.

Australian company to dump 3 million tons of sand and mud in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

Australian authorities approved a project on Friday to dump dredged sediment in the Great Barrier Reef marine park to create world’s biggest coal [dirty] port.

The decision which was made by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) follows the government approval last year for the coal terminal at Abbot Point port to be expanded.

The primary role of GBRMPA, believe it or not, is to protect the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park!

Some 233 scientists and conservationists had earlier signed a letter urging GBRMPA to reject the dumping plan.

“The permit allows North Queensland Bulk Ports Corp to dump [3 million tons of] dredged material in the reef marine park to deepen Abbot Point for two terminals planned by Adani Enterprises and GVK-Hancock, which have long term plans to export 120 million tonnes a year of coal all together,” reported Reuters.

Abbot Point is Australia’s most northerly deepwater coal port located south of Townsville about 25km north of Bowen on the Queensland coast.

The approved disposal site is located approximately 25 km  ENE of Abbot Point port, said GBRMPA.

The port hosts some 200 vessels with maximum cargo tonnage of about 16 million tons
each year, as of 2012.

The Great Barrier Reef – World Heritage Area

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef structure composed of nearly 3,000 individual reefs extending over 2,600 km (1,680 miles). The GBR spreads over an area of about 345,000 km (133,000 sq mi) in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef received world heritage status in 1981, the first coral reef ecosystem in the world to achieve the distinction.

Tidal Surge of Global Change 26 Times Faster in 21st Century: FIRE-EARTH

FIRE-EARTH Models show the rate of global change has intensified by a factor of at least 26 in the last decade compared with the 1960s.

FIRE-EARTH defines ‘global change’ as the deterioration in the planet’s life-support capacity that is caused by large-scale anthropogenic impact, leading to a total collapse.

The reality: Critical Overload Threatens Planetary Life Support Systems

FIRE-EARTH - HION Index - 1 JULY 2013 - hsc2
Diagram shows the exponential growth of Human Impact on Nature (HION) between 1960  and July 2013. Source: FIRE-EARTH Real-Time Earth Models. Copyright: FIRE-EARTH Blog Authors.

Index of Human Impact on Nature (HIoN) skyrockets to a new high

The FIRE-EARTH/CASF Index of Human Impact on Nature (HIoN), an index for calculating the human impact on the planetary life support systems, climbed to a critically high level of 323 on July 1, 2013. In other words, the anthropogenic impact on the living environment exceeded 3.23 times the planet’s diminishing carrying capacity.

  • The index is rising exponentially.
  • HIoN has risen 38 points, or more than 13 percent, since July 2012 when it reached 285.
  • The index was less than 80 in 1960, and rose to about 100 in 1980.

“According to HIoN projections, our cities and population centers could become almost entirely unsustainable by as early as 2015.”

FIRE-EARTH Climate Models show climate change forcings and feedbacks switching global weather patterns onto “primordial tracks.”

FIRE-EARTH Population Model shows mass die-offs resulting from human impact and the planetary response to the anthropogenic assault could occur by early 2016.

Severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides prompt Major Disaster Declaration for NC

North Carolina has been declared a Federal Disaster Area by the White House due to severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides  that occurred on July 27, 2013.

Severe storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides have severely affected the counties of Ashe, Avery, Catawba, Lincoln, Watauga and Wilkes, said the White House in a statement.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments, said FEMA.

Obama Itching to Accelerate Global Collapse

Posted by feww on August 31, 2013

Who needs a liveable planet!

Russian President Vladimir Putin has challenged the US to present to the UN Security Council evidence that Syria attacked the so-called rebels with chemical weapons near Damascus, saying the idea that Syrian government has used chemical weapons on its own people was “utter nonsense.”

US President Barrack Obama said on Friday the US was planning a “limited, narrow” military action against Syria after intelligence reports that 1,429 people were killed by chemical weapons on  August 21.

Mr Putin said it was ridiculous to suggest that Syrian government was to blame for the chemical attack on its own people.

“Syrian government forces are advancing, while the so-called rebels are in a tight situation, as they are not nearly as equipped as the government,” Putin told ITAR-TASS.

“What those who sponsor the so-called rebels need to achieve is simple – they need to help them in their fight… and if this happens, it would be a tragic development,” he said.

“In these conditions, to give a trump card to those who are calling for a military intervention is utter nonsense.”

“So I’m convinced that is nothing more than a provocation by those who want to drag other countries into the Syrian conflict.”

Putin said that the US failure to present evidence to the international community was “simply disrespectful”.

“If there is evidence it should be shown. If it is not shown, then there isn’t any,” he said.

Russia has previously warned that “any unilateral military action bypassing the UN Security Council” would be a “direct violation of international law.”

Both Moscow and Beijing have vetoed two previous Security Council draft resolutions on Syria.

Mr Putin urged Mr Obama—a Nobel Peace Prize laureate—to consider future victims in Syria before taking military action.

Syrian President Assad has vowed his country will defend itself against any “aggression.”

Floods Threaten Thousands of Towns in Russia

Posted by feww on April 22, 2012

Major flooding expected across Russia

More than 4,700 towns across Russia are threatened by floods, especially in Yakutia, the Maritime, Khabarovsk and Krasnoyarsk Territories, and the Irkutsk region in Siberia, said a report.

“The risk zone includes some 1,900 highway sections, 378 railroad sections and 563 bridges.”

In the past two weeks tens of thousands of homes have been deluged in southern and central Russia affecting tens of thousands of residents; many people have been evacuated.

The worst-hit areas are in “the Republic of Tatarstan, and Saratov and Samara regions, as well as in parts of the Central and Volga Federal Districts, where 45 bridges, two dams and two sections of highways have been flooded.”

In the latest incident, the 803-year-old Kadom village was inundated by floowaters, according to Ryazan’s regional emergencies ministry.

“More than 500 homes have been flooded in the central Russian region of Ryazan after melting snow caused the river Moksha to overflow,” affecting  about 1,200 people.

A state of emergency was earlier declared as floodwaters continued rising in the region, reports said.
