World’s hottest region was again the Persian Gulf area with at least 20 locations in six countries recording daily high temperatures above 50.0°C.

The coldest place was Dome Fuji (Antarctica) with a low of -72.4°C (-98.3°F).

Mass Evacuations Ordered in Japan

125,000 people in Akita Pref., Japan on evacuation order, or advisory following record rainfall

About 125,000 residents in Japan’s Akita Prefecture were ordered or advised to evacuate on Sunday as the risk of flooding and landslides increased due to record precipitation in the Tohoku region, according to local media reports.

City of Akita received a record 340mm of rainfall during a 24-hour period to 7am (local time) Sunday. It was also the most recorded precipitation on Earth for the day, with Bankura (India) a distant second at 318mm.

Extreme rains in southwestern Japan earlier this month left at least 28 people dead, and scores of others homeless.

Massive Snowstorm Prompts State of Emergency Declaration in New Mexico

Up to 20 inches of snow with drifts of 10 feet hit SE part of NM

Gov. Martinez has declared a state of emergency in New Mexico, mobilizing the National Guard to rescue hundreds of stranded drivers.

Officials have closed I-40 indefinitely, with stretches of the interstate also closed in Texas and Oklahoma, said local reports.

“This is a dire situation, especially the eastern half of the state where the storm has hit hardest and continues to dump snow,” said Martinez . “We monitored the situation throughout the night and activated the National Guard to assist stranded motorists.

Martinez has described the extreme weather events as a “serious situation” and asked New Mexicans to stay off the roads until the conditions improve.

“Someone may look out the winter in Albuquerque or Santa Fe and say, ‘It doesn’t seem that bad,’ but it is extremely bad,” Martinez said. “I cannot express how serious the situation is. The southeastern part of the state has 16 to 20 inches of snow with snow drifts of 8 to 10 feet.”

Missouri Declares a State of Emergency

Gov. Nixon has declared a state of emergency in after rain, flooding and flash flooding across Missouri severely impacted the state. Nixon has warned that residents avoid water-covered roads and avoid travel at all if possible.

Meanwhile, St. Louis region became the wettest year ever at the weekend with 58.14 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The previous record of 57.96 inches was set in 2008. More rain is expected across the region.

Weekend flash floods killed at least 13 people in Missouri and Illinois, while the death toll across southern and central US climbed to about 50 after days of severe weather.

Disaster in Texas

Powerful tornadoes killed at least 11 people in Greater Dallas Area, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and uprooting thousands of trees.

Gov. Abbott declared a state of emergency for Collin, Dallas, Ellis and Rockwall counties, and declared concurrently the four counties as disaster areas.

NWS has issued tornado warnings for Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas, also warning that a “historic blizzard” could hit Texas and Oklahoma with about 16 inches of snow.

States of Emergency in Oklahoma 

Oklahoma has also declared a states of emergency. The state of emergency proclaimed by Gov. Fallin on Nov. 29 will remain in effect, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said.

Major Storm System Bringing Ice, Heavy Snow, Severe Weather, and Flooding from The Gulf Coast to New England

A major storm system will continue to bring a plethora of impacts including heavy snowfall, ice, heavy rainfall, flooding, and severe weather today and tonight. The low pressure system will move toward the Great Lakes region on Tuesday shifting the winter storm threat into Upstate New York and New England.

Meanwhile, the high temperatures are expected to continue in eastern US, with Washington DC reaching 70ºF (21ºC) on Sunday.

South China on Alert for Extreme Rain Events

Extreme Rain Events Wreak Havoc across China

Alerts have been issued for rainstorms in south China, said China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC), reported the official news agency Xinhua.

Extreme rain events are forecast for parts of Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces, and Shanghai from Tuesday night to Wednesday, the NMC forecast.

The forecasters have also warned of possible thunderstorms and gales in the alert areas.

Meantime, torrential rains have killed at least 16 people [and affected very large number of others] since last week, said the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA).

“The ministry said on May 25 to 27 and 28 to 31, two heavy rainfalls occurred in the southern part of China, leading to casualties in Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other provincial regions.”

The extreme rain events have triggered multiple disasters including floods, landslides and mudslides leaving three people missing, the report said.

Extreme rain events over May 29-30 of May, combined with strong wind and large hail, hit parts of Northwest and North China, affecting almost 420,000 people, said the MCA.

Record Rainfall

Rainstorms have been pounding large parts of south China since May 4, breaking a 40-year rainfall record, said NMC.

[Between May 4 and 23] south China received about 200mm of rain, some 74 percent higher than the long-term average, said NMC.

Floods Devastate Communities in China, Chile, Peru

Extreme rain events and hail storms since Friday have damaged about 20,000 hectares of crops in 52 towns and villages in central China’s Hunan Province, affecting up to 240,000 people, and leaving more than 12,000 displaced as of Saturday evening, reported Xinhua.

In the east China’s Jiangxi Province, torrential rains have battered 54 cities and counties as of Saturday,”with some towns flooded and a highway landslide reported on Saturday afternoon. Icy roads have caused several bus accidents in the province,” said the report.

Scores Dead or Missing in Chile Floods

Widespread flash floods and mudslides, triggered by the heaviest rainfall in 80 years, have killed dozens of people, left more than a 100 missing and displaced thousands of others in Chile’s Atacama region.

The extreme weather events have affected tens of thousands of people across the region which reportedly includes the world’s driest desert.

“Rivers have burst their banks, flooding towns, making roads impassable and forcing miners in Chile, the world’s top copper exporter, to suspend operations,” IBT reported.

Peru Declares a State of Emergency

Record rains have also triggered major mudslides in eastern Peru, killing or injuring dozens of people, and leaving at least a dozen others missing.

President Humala of Peru has declared a state of emergency in the region east of the capital Lima that has been affected by the deadly mudslides.

Extreme Rain Events Force Mass Evacuations in Mesa, Arizona

Arizona Gov. Brewer declared a statewide emergency as record rains swamped large swathes of SW U.S., prompting flash-flood warnings in four states— Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah.

Severe flooding, described by NWS as “life-threatening situation,”  forced authorities to shut down Interstates 10 and 17 in Arizona as well a large section of Interstate 15 in Nevada.

At least two people were killed in Arizona and hundreds of drivers were forced to abandon their vehicles on the swamped interstates.

Record Rainfall

A record 84mm of rain fell on Phoenix’s  Sky Harbor International Airport, shattering previous record of 74mm set in September 1939 for the city’s most rainfall in a single day, according to reports.

In Tucson,  32mm of rain at Tucson International Airport also set a new record, breaking the previous single-day record of  24mm.

Slow-moving disaster

“Flooding affected up to 200 homes in Mesa on Monday. A troubled Mayor Alex Finter said in the evening that Mesa was ‘planning for this to be a week-long, two-week or one-month event,’ calling the flooding a ‘slow-moving disaster.'”

• Injuries: More than 100, according to media reports.
• The violent storms triggered widespread flooding.
• The first tornado developed around 5:55 pm CDT near El Reno. This storm then moved east to southeast into western and central portions of Oklahoma City, producing other tornadoes. (NWS)
• Other storms developed to the west and moved over the same areas as the first storm. This produced significant flooding in the Oklahoma City metro. (NWS)

Missouri Tornado

Missouri Gov. Nixon declared a state of emergency due to severe storm damage and widespread flooding. An EF-3 tornado caused extensive damage leaving behind a 22-mile path of destruction from St. Charles County into St. Louis County on Friday.

Illinois Tornado

An EF-2 tornado hit Madison County in southwestern Illinois, causing damage to buildings.

A second tornado, also an EF-2, touched down in neighboring Macoupin County, causing damage to dozens of buildings buildings, said an emergency management official.

• “We had houses twisted off foundations, houses with roofs taken off,” he said.

• A total of 20 tornadoes struck 7 states (OK, ND, KS, MO, IA, IN and IL) on Friday May 31, SPC reported.

Deadly Tornadoes Attack Oklahoma Again

Tornadoes kill ‘VNV*,’ injure many more in central Oklahoma

Having declared a Tornado Emergency for parts of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area on Friday, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned early Saturday that “Life-threatening” flash floods were hitting much of central and SE Oklahoma and issued Flash Flood Warnings for five additional states.

Gov. Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency. “This has been a very large storm that hit a lot of communities,” she told reporters.

“An extremely unstable air mass has developed across much of Central & Eastern Oklahoma,” the weather service had earlier warned, describing weather conditions as “particularly dangerous.”

“This will likely result in rapid development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.” NWS said on Friday.

At least five tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma, including a mile-wide twister west of Oklahoma City, causing extensive damage. The tornado-ravaged city of Moore was hit again by a tornado, and experienced widespread flooding.

The tornadoes overturned trucks, tractor trailers and cars on I-40, downing utility poles and tossing livestock on the road, eyewitnesses said.

There were tornadoes on the ground and aloft also in the following places: Oklahoma city,  Joplin, Missouri and St. Louis, Missouri.

The storm system also dumped at least 6 inches of rain  across most of Oklahoma and Canadian counties, stranding thousands of frightened motorists in flood water.

“Another tornado touched down Friday night 7 miles northeast of Moscow Mills, Mo., about 50 miles northwest of St. Louis. In St. Charles County, 24 houses were severely damaged or destroyed, said Mike O’Connell, communications director for the Missouri Department of Public Safety.”

The storm system knocked out power lines and left at least 250,000 customers without electricity across the Midwest.

“On Thursday, storms in Oklahoma and Arkansas killed at least three people, including Scott County, Arkansas, Sheriff Cody Carpenter, whose body was recovered early on Friday, said a spokesman for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission,” said a report.

Severe Weather Threat Shifts East on Saturday

Another round of severe weather on Saturday is expected, said the NWS Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, with Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys being the areas for greatest concern. Large hail, damaging winds and isolated strong tornadoes are all possible.

SPC confirmed a total of 36 tornado reports in AR, OK, IL, ND, KS, IA and MO on Thursday and Friday, as of posting.

*[NOTE: VNV stands for a “variable number of victims.”  It is an unspecified number, often more than 5 and less than 250, used for reporting  the number of  disaster deaths, which would otherwise be denied by the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.]

State of Emergency Declared in Missouri

Powerful storm system brings heavy rain, severe flooding, straight-line winds, and tornadoes to Missouri, following days of extreme rains that have prompted Flash Flood Warnings across much of the state.

“Much of Missouri is experiencing dangerous severe weather tonight, on the heels of several days of heavy rain,” said Gov. Nixon. “I urge Missourians to closely monitor weather conditions, so they can take shelter or move to higher ground if needed. The risk of severe weather remains with us well into tomorrow. The state of Missouri will continue to work closely with local officials to help protect lives and property from these storms.”

• Parts of more than 200 roads were shut down due to widespread flooding.

• Multiple tornadoes were spotted moving east across the St. Louis area Friday night, with reports of severe damage, said a report.

• A massive tornado touched down near Bridgeton, causing extensive damage near Harvester, MO, and injuring several people, eyewitnesses reported.

State of Emergency Declared in San Miguel County, NM, due to Large Wildfire

Gov. Martinez has declared a State of Emergency in San Miguel County and activated the State Emergency Operations Center after Tres Lagunas fire threatened cabins and vacation homes, and closed a highway, prompting dozens of evacuations near Pecos, NM.

The fast-moving wildfire in New Mexico’s Santa Fe National Forest, located near the communities of Pecos and Tres Lagunas, about 25 miles east of Santa Fe,  has consumed at least 2,000 acres and is threatening the Santa Fe and Las Vegas watersheds.

The National Weather Service is forecasting Critical Fire Weather conditions throughout the State and has declared a Red Flag Warning for the northern half of New Mexico through Saturday.

Melbourne, Australia hit by flash floods after record rainfall

Record rainfall in Australia’ s second largest city Melbourne triggered widespread flash floods. The city received cumulative rainfall of 48.4mm between 9:00 am Friday and 8:00 am Saturday, the largest amount in a June day since 1904.

The one-day record almost equaled the average rainfall for the month June, currently 49.2mm, Australia’s BOM reported.

Flooding kills at least 2,  affects 16,000 others in Xinjiang , NW China

Heavy flooding triggered by extreme rain events in NW China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has killed at least two people and affected thousands of others, according to local authorities.

• About 2,000 residents have been relocated.

• Some 700 homes have been damaged or destroyed .

• More than 13,000 livestock lost.

• Thousands of hectares of crops in Kashgar Prefecture destroyed.

• “The flooding also destroyed local roads, bridges and underground power lines in the region,” said a report.

NE U.S. Blizzard, Rainstorm GOES Movies

Late winter rainstorms pummeled  NE U.S.

And the severe weather season hasn’t even begun yet!

The northeastern U.S. was pummeled by blizzards, swamped by heavy flooding, and battered by late winter storms. Two movies of the events were captured by NASA Satellite GOES-12 between February 1 and 16, and March 8 and 16, 2010.

“Following the Nor’easter ‘parade of blizzards’ in February this year, another week-long parade of storms flooded the upper Midwest and Northeastern U.S. in March,” said a NASA GOES Project official. “The merge of three storms in the Midwest was unusual, where the normal pattern is a series of spring storms carried by the prevailing westerlies (winds).”

“The movie was created by overlaying the clouds observed several times per hour by NOAA’s GOES Imager onto a true-color map previously derived from NASA’s Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land-mapping instrument. The infrared channels on GOES detect clouds day and night, which are portrayed as grey for low clouds and white for high clouds. The movie compresses nine days into two minutes. It illustrates how continental-scale land/sea/air phenomena come together to make large late winter storms.” NASA Website said.

“Heavy rains that hit the northeast cause flooding, fatalities, power outages and damages. Downed trees from rain-soaked roots toppled power lines. Outages were reported in Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Literally thousands of trees were reported felled in Connecticut and New York. Flooding forced evacuations and put roadways under water. As far north as Maine, parts of the state received more than eight inches of rain. ”

Total rainfall for the first 19 days of March:

• Boston: 7.45″
• Bridgeport, Conn: 4.02″
• Newark, NJ: 5.24″
• New York City: 4.72″
• Portland, Maine: 3.57″ of rain.

Most of that rainfall was caused by the storms.

Note: The second movie linked to above, is a 2-minute movie compressed from GOES satellite data recorded February 1-16, 2010, capturing two blizzards which hit the Baltimore, Md. and Washington areas.

During the first two weeks of February, Washington, DC,  was put out of action by two blizzards which dumped heavy wet snow as follows:

• 5 inches fell on February 3
• 24 inches fell on February 6
• 12 inches on February 10.
• A second, back-to-back storm followed on February 16 dumping 10 inches on Philadelphia and New York, but spared Washington and Baltimor.

“These storms are called Nor’easters because the counter-clockwise circulation around a low pressure system on the Atlantic coast pushes moist sea air from the north-east into arctic air over the land. This windy mixture creates a very efficient snow-making machine from Boston to Washington. ‘The GOES movie illustrates how succeeding storms form along the Gulf coast, travel up the Atlantic coast, pause over the mid-Atlantic states, and finally slide out to sea,’ said a NASA official with GOES Project.” Source: NASA/EO website.

About 500 homes in the Elgin and Fochabers, Moray, Scotland, were evacuated due to the rivers Lossie and Spey flooding their banks after a record amount of rainfall. The residents were forced to spend the night in makeshift shelters.
