Moore Tornado Upgraded to EF5
NWS damage teams have upgraded the deadly tornado that struck Moore to EF5.
- Rating: EF5
- Peak Winds: 200 – 210 mph (338 km/h)
- Path Length: 17 miles
- Maximum Width: 1.3 miles
- Begin Time: 2:45pm CDT
- Begin Location: 4.4 miles west of Newcastle
- End Time: 3:35 pm CDT
- End Location: 4.8 miles east of Moore

Tornado Damage and Casualties
- Preliminary estimate for the damage is put at $3 billion.
- The tornado has left thousands of people homeless.
- Most of the 91 or so people killed by the tornado were resurrected within hours, thanks to the political will. Current death toll stands at only 24. (See also the ‘Joplin Syndrome’).
- About 240 others were injured.

Major Disaster Declared in Oklahoma after Mega Tornado Kills Dozens
The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Oklahoma in the area affected by severe storms and tornadoes beginning on May 18, 2013, and continuing.
The areas worst affected are the counties of Cleveland, Lincoln, McClain, Oklahoma, and Pottawatomie.
At least 91 people, many of them children, are feared to have been killed and about 240 others injured after a mega tornado ripped through Oklahoma City suburbs, leveling numerous blocks in the city of Moore (pop: ~ 55,000), Cleveland County, Oklahoma.
The death toll included 51 confirmed deaths and an additional 40 bodies on their way to the Medical Examiner’s office. (See also the ‘Joplin Syndrome’).
- The tornado was rated as at least an EF4, with winds of up to 200mph, according to NWS preliminary damage ratings.
- The tornadic event began at 2.56pm CDT on Monday and lasted for 40 minutes.
- Moore twister was as much as two miles wide, and carved a 20-mile path of destruction.
- The tornado left obliterated many hundreds of homes and other buildings in Moore.

This is a preliminary tornado track for the tornado that affected Newcastle, Moore, and Oklahoma City on May 20, 2013. The tornado touchdown at around 2:56 pm in Newcastle, OK and moved through Moore and south OKC before lifting at around 3:36 pm. The path length is estimated to be about 20 miles long with a preliminary damage rating of at least EF4. —NWS
“Our hearts are broken,” Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin said. “This is bigger than anything I’ve ever seen. It’s absolutely huge. It’s horrific.”
More Severe Weather Expected from Great Lakes to Central Texas on Tuesday
More severe weather is expected on Tuesday from the Great Lakes across the Mississippi River Valley and into central Texas. Primary threats will be very large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes. Some of the storms could also produce heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding concerns, especially in the Ark-La-Tex region. —NWS

Groundwater depletion in the U.S. has accelerated
Groundwater depletion in the United States during 1900–2008 was about 1,000 cubic kilometers (km³), according to a new study released by USGS.
- The rate of groundwater depletion has increased significantly since about 1950, with maximum rates occurring during the most recent period (2000–2008), said the report.
- The average depletion rate climbed to about 25 km³ [6.6 trillion gallons] per year during 2000–2008, compared to 9.2 km³ per year averaged over the 1900–2008 period.

At least 37 killed, many injured in OKC gigantic twister attack
The massive tornado first touched down in Newcastle and barreled toward Interstate 44, Moore and South Oklahoma City, killing at least 37 people, as of posting, injuring scores of others, destroying hundreds of buildings and leaving a path of destruction behind.
The deadly twister was at least an EF4 tornado packing winds of about 200mph (320km/h) and was reportedly as much as ‘two-miles’ wide.
It struck about 15:00 CDT (UTC -5hrs) on Monday in Moore, Oklahoma, a suburb south of Oklahoma City, and remained on the ground for at least 40 minutes.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, who had already declared a state of emergency in 16 counties after the previous round of tornado attack, told CBS: “Well, we know we’ve had a massive tornado that has come through a major metropolitan area in Moore, Okla. It was a very wide tornado, a very strong tornado. It has damaged lots of neighborhoods, it’s hit two schools that possibly had school children in them. It’s also it a hospital and a big movie theater and a commercial area.”

Deadly storms, tornadoes hit US Southeast, Midwest
A massive system barreled through central and southern U.S., dumping heavy rains in Kentucky and Tennessee, spawning about two dozen tornadoes and leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
- The strongest tornado was an EF-2 which reportedly touched down near Mt. Juliet, a suburb of Nashville, with winds of about 115 mph.

- Tornadoes have been reported in Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.
- The storms damaged or destroyed homes, killing at least three people and cutting power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across the affected areas.
- Extreme rain and golf-ball sized hail struck several areas, NWS reported.
- “Authorities in Adairsville enacted a mandatory dusk-to dawn-curfew, where the storm affected a wide swath of homes and businesses,” said a report.

Dozens of tornadoes tore through the U.S. midsection as Kansas declared disaster emergency
More than 120 tornadoes pummel Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Indiana leaving at least 5 people dead in Woodward, NW Oklahoma, and forcing Kansas governor to declare a disaster emergency.
- Iowa. About 75 percent of the small town of Thurman (Fremont County) has been destroyed. The town has been evacuated with an emergency shelter in a nearby town. No power in the town, SPC reported.
- Oklahoma. Numerous reports of major structural damage on western and northern part of Woodward; at least 5 killed and many injured.
- Kansas. A tornado has caused widespread damage and power outages in Wichita, Kansas, but there were bno reports of deaths or injuries as of posting.
- Tornadoes have damaged or destroyed many homes, businesses, a jail, a hospital and an Air Force base aaround the region, reports said.
- Nebraska. Baseball-sized hail tore siding from houses and shattered windows in Petersburg, about 130 miles NW of Omaha.
- Sedgwick County, Kansas, declared a state of disaster and said the storm damage could top $280 million.
- Severe weather is expected to continue Sunday “from east Texas and Arkansas and up into the Great Lakes,” said Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

Tornado-devastated Dallas, Tarrant and Kaufman counties declared disaster areas
Perry has declared disaster for three counties following Tuesday’s tornadoes that destroyed or damaged an estimated 650 structures.
- Texas, USA. Texas Governor has declared disaster for three counties following Tuesday’s devastating tornadoes that cause significant damage to property and infrastructure.
- Twisters affected an estimated 650 structures, with 200 structures destroyed and at least 100 sustaining major damage, reports said.
- Dozens of people were injured, but no fatalities were reported.
- Up to 1,700 American Airlines and American Eagle flights were canceled since the storms, including about 300 on Friday.
- The damage is estimated to be “in the tens of millions of dollars,” according to experts.
- A Dallas County Judge, who had earlier signed a local disaster declaration, estimated road and bridge damage to Dallas County to exceed $1 million, a report said.

Disaster declared in Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs
Multiple tornadoes touched down in Dallas-Fort Worth area, raking entire neighborhoods, destroying homes, flattening trailer trucks and causing numerous injuries, some critical.

- Officials signed a disaster declaration for Lancaster, Texas, about 15 miles south of Dallas, after a twister damaged 500 structures, more than half of them severely.
- Widespread looting was reported.
- In Arlington, a tornado has caused severe damage to homes and businesses prompting the city officials to issue a disaster declaration.
- The DFW area was also hit with thunderstorms that dumped damaging hail the size of baseballs in several places.
- More than a 100 planes were damaged by large hail at Dallas Fort Worth Airport, a spokesman told AP.
- American Airlines canceled or diverted 500 flights in and out of its hub airport by late Tuesday afternoon.

SPC tornado and severe weather map 20-21 March 2012. SPC received at least 11 tornado reports in Louisiana on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Parishes throughout the state of Louisiana including Acadia, Ascension, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Claiborne, Jefferson Davis, Natchitoches, St. Charles, Union, Vermilion, and Vernon had already declared states of emergency following yet another round of severe weather and widespread destructive flooding.

- “… beginning on Tuesday, March 20th and predicted to continue through Thursday, March 22nd, a series of strong thunderstorms passed over the State, depositing up to 6” of rain and generating tornadic activity throughout the State, many in areas which are still recovering from the severe weather and flooding which occurred a mere week ago and resulted in the issuance of a separate statewide emergency proclamation –20 BJ 2012,” Gov. Jindal said in his state of emergency proclamation.
- “… this latest round of severe weather has created dangerous conditions formotorists and other travelers, required widespread school closures, caused damage to houses and buildings, loss of electricity in localized areas, and is causing flooding and the threat of flooding across a large portion of the State;”
- The state of emeregncy will remain in effect for 30 days from Wednesday, March 21, 2012 to Friday, April 20, 2012, unless terminated sooner.

Other Global Disasters
- Mexico Quake Update. The 7.4Mw quake has destroyed about 150 homes and damaged about 1,250 buildings. Most of the damage occurred in the municipality of Ometepec in Guerrero, near the quake’s epicenter.
- At least 11 people were reportedly injured; no fatalities reported, as of posting.
- The worst hit place was the village of Huixtepec, where nearly half of the buildings were severely damaged, reports said.
- Oregon, USA. Klamath County commissioners in Klamath Falls, Oregon, have declared a drought emergency.
- The Klamath Basin, which straddles the Oregon-California border, has ongoing “trouble meeting the water demands of the 11,400 farms on a federal irrigation project,” a report said.
- California. Marin County officials have declared a drought emergency, a report said.
- “This resolution will recognize an emergency drought condition exists and continues to develop in Marin County,” county Agricultural Commissioner Stacy Carlsen said, adding ranchers suffered a “50 percent loss in livestock forage as a result of adverse weather conditions” including little precipitation.
- Chiang Mai, Thailand. “Haze from forest fires and airborne dust particles beyond safety levels still blanket the northern tourist city of Chiang Mai, affecting air traffic in the region,” the Thai News Agency reported.
- Wildfires intensified by drought are ravaging northern Thailand.
- Chiang Mai Airport is using runway lights during daylight hours because of poor visibility.
- About quarter of a million people have sought medical treatment for air pollution-related illnesses, including respiratory and coronary heart disease, said the report.
- Colorado, USA. A massive wildfire on Colorado’s eastern plains consumed more than 84 square miles, forcing at least 1,000 residents to flee their homes in a small Colorado town of Eckley, Yuma County, and killing an undetermined number of farm animals and wildlife.
- “Things are expected to worsen by the weekend, with high fire danger in eastern Colorado, southeast Wyoming and far western Nebraska and South Dakota,” a report said.

- NWS reported 41 record or record-tying high temperatures for March 20 across 8 states in the central United States. The new records included:
- Marquette, Mich., recorded 78ºF, which was 22 degrees higher than the old record of 56ºF set in 1976, NWS reported.
- Milwaukee, WI. New Record: 83 degrees; previous record: 77 degrees (1921).
- Chicago, IL (Midway). New Record: 85 degrees; previous record: 71 degrees (1938)
- Romeoville, IL. New Record: 84 degrees; previous record: 65 degrees (2003)
- Jackson, KY. New Record: 86 degrees ; previous record: 78 degrees (2011)

- Portugal. Driest February in more than 8 decades is devastating Portugal with “extreme” or “severe” drought covers about three-quarters of the country.
- Farmers are reportedly praying for a miracle, but the drought is expected to last until at least the end of March, official forecasters said.
- The drought is also boosting the number of wildfires in the country with as many as 200 forest fires reported on warmer days.
Other Drought-related Headlines
- Texas, USA. Thousands of Texas rice farmers won’t be getting irrigation water anytime soon, while more than 40 percent of the state remains in severe drought.
- The water level in Travis and Buchanan lakes are currently 3,200 acre-feet (1 billion gallons) short of the stage they must reach before the farmers can receive water, reports said.

- The Midwest and South, USA. Death toll from multiple tornadoes that struck the US Midwest and South on Friday has risen to at least 39, a total of 52 for the week.

- Kentucky. NWS has confirmed that an EF4 tornado hit Henryville, north of Louisville, with winds of 175MPH.
- The tornado which struck on Saturday remained on the ground for 52 miles, measuring about 150 yards wide.
- Indiana. The state has issued disaster declarations for Clark, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington counties, after tornadoes and high winds left 14 dead and caused widespread damage and destruction.

Flooding Disasters
- Oregon. The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Oregon and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides during the period of January 17-21, 2012.
- The severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides caused significant damage in Benton, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Hood River, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, and Tillamook counties.
Flooding Disasters in Australia
- Sydney, Australia. Unprecedented amounts of rain have fallen over the Australian state of NSW, since February, inundating more than 75 percent of the state.
- Many rivers in the region are expected to peak more than 11 meters, forcing the emergency officials to close multiple bridges.
- Some areas have received more rain in 48 hours than the annual average.
- Thousands of people across the Australian state of NSW “face an indefinite wait before they can return to their homes as continuous heavy rain swells rivers across the state,” said a report.
- “About 2,000 people in Sydney’s flood-threatened north-western fringes have been told to evacuate as emergency services battle what they say is a record event.”
- Evacuation orders have been issued for several more areas.
- Water was released from Sydney’s Warragamba Dam, which reached full capacity last night for the first time in 14 years.
- NSW is experiencing all-time record rains.
- Victoria, Australia. Deadly floods have forced the evacuation of patients from a hospital in northeastern Victoria.
- At least one person was found dead from flood-related causes. The victim’s body was found at Majors Creek in Araluen, reports said.
- The floods are said to be the region’s worst in living memory.

Extreme weather devastated a vast region from the Ohio Valley to the Gulf Coast, spawning a large cluster of about 80 tornadoes that struck 10 states in the Midwest and south on Friday, killing at least 31 people, injuring scores more and destroying or damaging many hundreds of buildings.

- Kentucky. Governor Steve Beshear declared a statewide emergency Friday following deadly tornadoes which claimed at least 14 lives.
- Indiana. The southeastern corner of the state was severely damaged; at least 16 people were confirmed dead.
- “Marysville is completely gone,” said Clark County Sheriff’s Maj. Chuck Adams [Marysville is located 10 miles north of Charlestown along Ind. 3.]
- “We knew this was coming. We were watching the weather like everyone else,” Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden said. “This was the worst-case scenario. There’s no way you can prepare for something like this.”
- Several other small towns in southern Indiana have been leveled, reports said.

- Ohio. A state of emergency was declared in Clermont County, after tornadoes caused severe damage leaving at least 5 dead.
- Alabama. Tornadoes devastated two northern Alabama counties destroying or damaging about 250 homes.
- Storms left at least one person dead in Tallapoosa County

Missouri, Kansas, W Virginia and Kentucky declare States of Emergency due to violent storms
Missouri Governor (Jay Nixon) has declared a statewide emergency in response to the deadly tornadoes and violent storms that struck southwest and southeast parts of the state.

- Missouri, USA. The extreme weather system that moved across the Midwest and South spawned tornadoes and high winds and caused the loss of life, numerous injuries and significant damage to multiple communities across Missouri, including Branson, Buffalo, Cassville, Lebanon and Oak Ridge.
- The Midwest and South. Death toll from a reported 36 tornadoes the struck the Midwest and Southern U.S. currently stands at 13, including 3 in the Tennessee.
- Kansas. States of emergency have been declared in Butler, Chautauqua, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Douglas, Franklin, Harper, Kingman, Labette, Leavenworth, Marion, Montgomery, McPherson, Reno, Republic, Sumner, Wabaunsee and Wilson counties.
- Tennessee. Severe storm and high winds left at least 3 people dead, a dozen injured and up to 100 homes damaged or destroyed.
- Kentucky. An EF2 tornado with winds of about 125 MPH struck Elizabeth town, Kentucky.
- Tornadoes struck four counties across the state.
- Tornadoes and high winds flattened mobile homes, houses and businesses in Elizabeth town, Henderson, and Hodgenville, officials said.
- NWS confirmed EF2 tornadoes in Morgan and Russell counties.
- A state of emergency was declared in West Liberty where high winds destroyed a church and many buildings.
- West Virginia. State of emergency has been declared in Marion County following torrential rains which left dozens of homes and businesses submerged under water.
- Flash flooding also occurred across Harrison, Monongalia and Preston counties, reports said.

- U.S. Midwest. Violent storms devastated communities in the Midwest and South, killing at least 12 people across three states, injuring hundreds and destroying or damaging up to a thousand homes.
- Illinois. Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois has declared Harrisburg a disaster area, after an EF4 tornado blasted through the town (pop: ~ 9,000), killing at least 6 people, injuring more than 100 others and flattening entire blocks of homes.
- Missouri. Governor Jay Nixon has declared Taney County a disaster area after an EF2 tornado with winds of about 130MPH touched down in Stone and Taney Counties in Missouri leaving a 22-mile path of destruction from the Kimberling City area to Branson.
- The tornado impact injured 33 people and damaged/destroyed more than 100 homes and businesses in Branson, reports said.
- About 20 of the more than 200 hotels in Branson have been badly damaged including a large motel, officials said.
- Branson, dubbed a ‘music Mecca,’ is a major tourist destination with about 8 million visitors arriving each year.
- The Next System. The storms are now heading for Mid-Atlantic states; however, more destructive tornadoes may be spawned by the next system striking both the Midwest and South, a meteorologist with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said.

- Australia. About three-quarters of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) as well as parts of the two neighboring states of Victoria and the Northern Territory in the SE of the continent are affected by floods, reports said.
- Thousands of people have been evacuated from Cooma, near the NSW Snowy Mountains, and Goulburn, midway between Sydney and Canberra.
- Parts of Central Australia have received more than 100mm of rain in the past two days, about a half of their annual rainfall, leaving many roads impassable.
- “In the [Australian Capital Territory,] a large dam near Canberra being built after a severe drought four years ago was expected to overflow last night. The old dam, built in 1912, is completely submerged for the first time in its history,” said a report

Southern U.S. Wintertime Tornado Outbreak
Several damage surveys were completed today in the wake of a tornado outbreak in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama last night. Most of the damage surveyed so far has been rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating considerable damage with wind speeds reaching between 111 and 135 mph. However, the tornado that passed through Clay, Alabama, which is just north of Birmingham has been rated an EF-3. This tornado produced significant damage and was capable of wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. (Source: NWS)

- Georgia: 2 tornadoes struck Macon and Dooly Counties Saturday, NWS said.
Tornadoes have destroyed or damaged about 500 homes throughout the region and uprooted/snapped thousands of trees.
Other Global Disasters
- Papua New Guinea (PNG). A massive landslide has completely buried two villages in PNG.
- “The landslide is about a kilometer long and about 300 meters wide. There are people buried underneath and a number of them are from what I have heard, children.” Local MP Francis Potape has told Radio Australia.
- At least 40 people are reportedly missing, reports said.
- The landslide occurred near Exxon-Mobil’s liquefied natural gas project in the new Hela Province, blocking the main road and stopping work at the site and a nearby airfield.

A line of strong storms swept across the Southeast spawning deadly tornadoes.

- US Southeast. A line of strong storms swept across the Southeast spawning deadly tornadoes.
- At least 21 tornadoes were reported in Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama, SPC said.
- Twisters have killed at least 4 people in Alabama, destroying or damaging dozens of buildings, trapping residents in their homes and felling trees and power lines.
- The storms also brought hail and damaging winds to the region.
- Winds of up to 70mph struck both Memphis and Little Rock areas causing damage to building, and funnel clouds were spotted near Little Rock, NWS reported.
- SPC received a total 173 reports of tornadoes, strong winds and hail, as of posting.

- Alabama:
- At least 4 people were killed and scores of others injured as storms pummeled Jefferson County, causing “significant damage.”
- Chilton County – MAJOR STRUCTUAL DAMAGE REPORTED IN MAPLESVILLE WITH PEOPLE TRAPPED IN HOMES
- Jefferson County – MAJOR STUCTURAL DAMAGE REPORTED NEAR THE 500 BLOCK OF U.S. HIGHWAY 31 IN FULTONDALE.
- ST Clair County – MAJOR STRUCTUAL DAMAGE REPORTED ON OLD SPRINGVILLE ROAD. INJURIES UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME
- Jefferson County – MAJOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE REPORTED IN TRUSSVILLE WITH MULTIPLE TREES DOWNED.
- Jefferson County – TREES DOWN AND DAMAGE TO HOMES NEAR BALBOA COURT.
- Jefferson County – SEVERAL HOMES DESTROYED IN THE PARADISE VALLEY AREA IN CLAY. TIME ESTIMATED FROM RADAR.
- Jefferson County – PAWNEE VILLAGE ROAD COMPLETELY IMPASSIBLE IN TARRANT.
Other Global Disasters
- Fiji. About a 1,000 people have been evacuated amid severe flooding in Fiji.
- The worst affected areas are the northern island of Vanua Levu, and parts of Viti Levu, the largest of Fiji islands and where the capital Suva is located.
- “In Labasa most of the crops were damaged due to the flooding, they also experienced some strong winds. We have heard that a lot of families have moved to the evacuation centres. Most of the roads were flooded yesterday in Vanua Levu and Vitu Levu as well today. Some of the bridges were damaged, especially in Vanua Levu. And we have just received a report that the river level in Nadi town is rising,” a local meteorologist said.
- The Fiji Meteorological Service forecast heavy rain to continue over much of Fiji until Wednesday, causing more flooding in low-lying areas throughout the country, a report said.
- “People living along coastal areas that have been flooded will have to be very careful. During the high tide in the evening, water levels will rise. It they need assistance they should contact the authorities available. If they should move, I suggest they start moving now because the next high tide will be at 6 in the morning. Now both times for these high tides occur in the dark and it will be dangerous if they don’t start moving now.”

Friday: Severe thunderstorms forecast across most of the country

Wednesday storms spawned softball-sized hail in Georgia and damaging winds in upstate York, but no fatalities were reported, as of posting.
SPC received a total of 1,017 severe weather reports across 14 states on Wednesday (preliminary data) including 96 tornado reports. On Thursday there were 414 reports, including 5 tornadoes.

Joplin Tornado
Death toll from Joplin Tornado stands at 125, with about 1,000 injured. The number of missing since the tornado struck 5 days ago is shrouded in secrecy. The figure previously released by the authorities, and subsequently retracted, was 1,500. The actual figure for those unaccounted for may be closer to 1,000.

Death toll from Joplin tornado has risen to 126, as another body was found in the debris, and the number of missing was put at 232, officials said. “We will keep a relentless focus on the search, rescue and identification of those 232 people, and we will not rest until everyone has been accounted for, and that number is zero,” Governor Jay Nixon said.

Death toll from tornadoes swept the Midwest on Tuesday night, has climbed to at least 16 people: 10 fatalities in Oklahoma, 4 in Arkansas and 2 in Kansas.

U.S. Tornado Outbreak Statistics – April 25-28, 2011
- Three-day Total: 362 twisters touched down between 8:00 a.m. EDT April 25 to 8:00 a.m. April 28, 2011. (NOAA’s preliminary estimate)
- One-day Total: 312 tornadoes during a 24-hour period from 8:00 a.m. EDT April 27 to 8:00 a.m. April 28 (NWS estimate)
- April Total: 871 tornadoes (SPC estimate for April 2011)
- YTD Total: 1,036 twisters have been reported between Jan 1 and April 30, 2011 (preliminary)
- The largest number of tornadoes on record previously: 148 tornadoes on April 3-4, 1974.
- “The April 26-28 period had the most people killed by tornadoes in a two-day period since April 5-6, 1936, when 454 people were killed, mostly in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Gainesville, Georgia.” NOAA reported.
- “April 27, 2011, is the deadliest single day for tornadoes since the March 18, 1925, tornado outbreak that had 747 fatalities across 7 states (including the Tri-State Tornado). “
- The Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado caused at least 65 fatalities (Many are still reported as missing). This tornado had a maximum width of 1.5 miles and a track of 80 miles.
- Most fatalities from a single tornado in the United States: 80 people were killed in a tornado in southern Kansas, including 75 in Udall, Kansas on May 25, 1955.
- The deadliest single tornado in the United States: 695 people were killed in the Tri-State tornado that struck Missouri, Illinois and Indiana on March 18, 1925. [This figure should be treated as an estimate. FIRE-EARTH]

34 tornadoes rip through vast area from Oklahoma to Ohio
SPC received reports of 34 tornado sightings, 541 storms including 20 with winds of greater than 65 knots (120+km/h), and 355 hail reports, including 20 reports of the stones measuring 2+inches (5+cm) in diameter between Tuesday evening and Wednesday Morning.
Fatalities: None reported as of posting
Damage: About 2 dozen homes destroyed in Mid and W. Tennessee (NO reported touchdowns as of posting)
Power Outages: Storms knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Tennessee.
Snowfall: 7 to nearly 10 inches for in parts of southeast Minnesota, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and various areas in Michigan

Weather Forecast for Wednesday Evening/ Thursday
Possible severe storms across “parts of the Lower Mississippi Valley, the Southern Plains, the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic” starting Wednesday evening, with large hail, heavy rains and 60MPH winds forecast for the areas.
“… areas of the South and East, the south-central Plains and the Midwest at Slight Risk of severe weather development through the rest of the week.” NWS reported.
