Massive Twin Twisters Destroy Homes, Damage Multiple Towns in NE, IA
Massive twin tornadoes swept Nebraska, killing at least one, injuring dozens, 16 critically, and causing substantial damage to at least four towns in Nebraska, according to various reports.
The powerful super-cell storm system spawning the tornadoes has since headed into northwestern Iowa.
“The towns of Pilger [population: ~ 400] and Stanton had suffered damage and emergency officials were searching for survivors, said Al Vacanti, city administrator for the nearby town of Wisner,” reported Reuters.
“Pilger is totally destroyed. We’re heading there to help out,” said Cathy Ruppert, wife of Stanton council member Mike Ruppert. She did not know whether there were injuries.
“A hospital spokeswoman says at least one person is dead and 16 others are in critical condition after two massive tornadoes swept through northeast Nebraska,” AP reported.
“This is one powerful storm that moved across our area and we do believe there is still a threat for strong, severe thunderstorms including the potential for tornadoes,” said a meteorologist at National Weather Service in Omaha.

Tornadoes Hit Stanton, Cuming and Wayne Counties
Several northeast Nebraska communities have been affected by tornadoes and high winds this evening, leaving areas with severe damage. Emergency responders are working in Pilger, Wisner and Stanton conducting searches for people trapped under debris.
Nebraska Emergency Management Agency has had reports of damage from local emergency managers in both Cuming and Wayne Counties.
The State Emergency Operations Center is activated at NEMA. The Nebraska State Patrol and American Red Cross are working with NEMA staff at the SEOC Nebraska Department of Roads staff in the field.
NE Gov. has declared a state of emergency and deployed the national guard.
Nebraska State Patrol has closed off the town of Pilger. No one is being allowed in or out. Norfolk Police Captain said damage was extensive, resources are in place to help, and they’re asking volunteers to stay away so first responders can do their jobs.
The storm Prediction Center (SPC) at NWS has received 20 tornado reports in NE and IA as posting.
Gov. Pat Quinn has declared 6 additional counties in Illinois disaster areas after tornadoes tore through the state, killing at least 6 people and leaving hundreds of others injured.
A total of 85 twisters (confirmed by SPC), including two EF4 tornadoes, which pack 166 mph to 200 mph winds, touched down in the US heartland destroying or damaging hundreds of homes.

Quinn declared disaster areas in Champaign, Grundy, LaSalle, Massac, Tazewell, Washington, Woodford, Douglas, Jasper, Pope, Wabash, Wayne, and Will counties.
“Illinois was hit extremely hard by deadly tornadoes that left many in a great deal of pain and loss,” Governor Quinn said in a statement. “Although we are still receiving reports of massive damage to communities across our state, we want to make sure people are getting the assistance and resources they need as quickly as possible.”

Sunday’s deadly storms killed at least six people and injured scores of others, while damaging and destroying hundreds of homes and businesses and cutting power to tens of thousands of residents.
The counties declared disaster areas are Champaign, Grundy, LaSalle, Massac, Tazewell, Washington and Woodford, according to the Disaster Proclamation issued by Gov. Pat Quinn’s office on Monday.
“Although we are still receiving reports of massive damage to communities across our state, we want to make sure people are getting the assistance and resources they need as quickly as possible,” said the governor. “As we pray for the families of those who have lost their lives and others who are injured, the state of Illinois will do everything necessary to help these communities recover.”
A large swarm of storms brought destructive winds and tornadoes to Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York.
Illinois took the brunt of the ferocious weather system, which spawned a total of 76 confirmed tornadoes, and 451 storm reports.
Washington (Population: 16,000), a small city in Tazewell County, about 140 miles southwest of Chicago, was the hardest hit area, with up to 500 homes damaged or destroyed, according to reports. of 16,000.

Two of the deadly twisters were rated EF-4 tornadoes, reported the National Weather Service (NWS).
EF4 tornadoes pack destructive winds of between 166 and 260 mph (267 – 322kph), and can leave well-constructed houses leveled, blowing away structures with weak foundations blown away some distance; throwing cars and generating large missiles.

Strong winds in the Northeast and across the Great Lakes will subside today as the powerful storm system responsible for yesterday’s severe weather continues to move farther away into Canada. Meanwhile, another storm system will move into the Pacific Northwest bringing rain and mountain snow. NWS
“You don’t need temperatures in the 80s and 90s to produce severe weather [since] the strong winds compensate for for the lack of heating,” said a forecaster at NWS. “That sets the stage for what we call wind shear, which may produce tornadoes.”

State of emergency declared as deadly tornadoes tear through Oklahoma
Powerful twisters strike U.S. states of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas and Illinois, and Oklahoma.
Governor Fallin declared a State of Emergency for 16 Oklahoma counties: Caddo, Cleveland, Comanche, Creek, Garfield, Grant, Greer, Kiowa, Lincoln, Logan, McClain, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Pawnee, Payne and Pottawatomie.
The state of emergency was declared in the 16 counties because they sustained the heaviest damage from the twisters, straight-line winds, fist-size hail and flash flooding, which began late Saturday evening.
The worst damage was caused by a deadly tornado that struck near the town of Shawnee, about 50km from Oklahoma City, leveling a mobile home park.
At least one person was confirmed dead in Pottawatomie County and two dozen others were reportedly injured.
In addition to Shawnee, several other towns and communities were severely affected by the extreme weather including Bethel Acres, Carney, Edmond, Little Axe, Norman and Wellston.
Storm-related injuries have also been reported in other parts of Oklahoma, as well as in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa.
Severe Weather Threat to Continue Through Monday Across the Central States —NWS
After over 300 reports of severe weather on Sunday, another round of dangerous severe weather is expected Monday with the greatest threat once again in the southern Plains targeting Oklahoma and parts of Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. However, severe weather is possible much further north towards Chicago and Madison as well.

Iowa. About 75 percent of the small town of Thurman (Fremont County) has been destroyed. The town has been evacuated with an emergency shelter in a nearby town. No power in the town, SPC reported.
Oklahoma. Numerous reports of major structural damage on western and northern part of Woodward; at least 5 killed and many injured.
Kansas. A tornado has caused widespread damage and power outages in Wichita, Kansas, but there were bno reports of deaths or injuries as of posting.
Tornadoes have damaged or destroyed many homes, businesses, a jail, a hospital and an Air Force base aaround the region, reports said.
Nebraska. Baseball-sized hail tore siding from houses and shattered windows in Petersburg, about 130 miles NW of Omaha.
Sedgwick County, Kansas, declared a state of disaster and said the storm damage could top $280 million.

Perry has declared disaster for three counties following Tuesday’s tornadoes that destroyed or damaged an estimated 650 structures.
Texas, USA. Texas Governor has declared disaster for three counties following Tuesday’s devastating tornadoes that cause significant damage to property and infrastructure.
Twisters affected an estimated 650 structures, with 200 structures destroyed and at least 100 sustaining major damage, reports said.
Dozens of people were injured, but no fatalities were reported.
Up to 1,700 American Airlines and American Eagle flights were canceled since the storms, including about 300 on Friday.
The damage is estimated to be “in the tens of millions of dollars,” according to experts.
A Dallas County Judge, who had earlier signed a local disaster declaration, estimated road and bridge damage to Dallas County to exceed $1 million, a report said.

Officials signed a disaster declaration for Lancaster, Texas, about 15 miles south of Dallas, after a twister damaged 500 structures, more than half of them severely.
Widespread looting was reported.
In Arlington, a tornado has caused severe damage to homes and businesses prompting the city officials to issue a disaster declaration.
The DFW area was also hit with thunderstorms that dumped damaging hail the size of baseballs in several places.
More than a 100 planes were damaged by large hail at Dallas Fort Worth Airport, a spokesman told AP.
American Airlines canceled or diverted 500 flights in and out of its hub airport by late Tuesday afternoon.

Michigan, USA. A powerful tornado touched down northeast of Dexter, northwest of Ann Arbor, leveling or damaging at least 123 homes, uprooting trees and felling power lines, sparking fires and flooding neighborhoods. The tornado, packing winds of 135mph, stayed on the ground for about 30 minutes leaving behind a 10-mile path of destruction.
Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department told Reuters that “there are homes leveled [in Dexter.]”
Sheriff’s spokesman told The AP that at least homes were destroyed and 105 others significantly damaged in Dexter and the surrounding area.
More than 200 people have been displaced and placed in a temporary shelter at a nearby school.
Another tornado touched down in Columbiaville, Lapeer County causing damage to trees and powerliness. The tornado left a one-mile path of twisted debris, SPC said.
A third tornado touchdown in SSE of Ida, Monroe County, also caused damage to 3 homes, trees and powerlines.

West Virginia, USA.Several counties in southern West Virginia experienced widespread flooding following severe storms and torrential rains.
The storms caused “extreme devastation” in Logan County.
“Once again, severe storms have caused major flooding in our state, causing significant devastation to both homes and businesses,” said the state governor (Earl Ray Tomblin).
Mingo County has declared a state of emergency following the deluge.
The governor is expected to declare a statewide state of emergency.
“The communities of Verdenville, Whitman, Mud Fork, Mt. Gay, Holden and several locations right in the downtown district were affected, with the estimate of homes damaged or destroyed being over 500 as of now,” said a report.
At least a dozen roads and bridges in Logan County alone were closed due to high water, mudslides, washouts and rock falls, reports said.
The towns of Griffithsville and Yawkey in Lincoln County were also severely hit by flooding.

Kentucky. NWS has confirmed that an EF4 tornado hit Henryville, north of Louisville, with winds of 175MPH.
The tornado which struck on Saturday remained on the ground for 52 miles, measuring about 150 yards wide.
Indiana. The state has issued disaster declarations for Clark, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington counties, after tornadoes and high winds left 14 dead and caused widespread damage and destruction.

Flooding Disasters
Oregon. The Disaster President has declared a major disaster exists in the State of Oregon and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides during the period of January 17-21, 2012.
The severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides caused significant damage in Benton, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Hood River, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, and Tillamook counties.
Flooding Disasters in Australia
Sydney, Australia. Unprecedented amounts of rain have fallen over the Australian state of NSW, since February, inundating more than 75 percent of the state.
Many rivers in the region are expected to peak more than 11 meters, forcing the emergency officials to close multiple bridges.
Some areas have received more rain in 48 hours than the annual average.
Thousands of people across the Australian state of NSW “face an indefinite wait before they can return to their homes as continuous heavy rain swells rivers across the state,” said a report.
“About 2,000 people in Sydney’s flood-threatened north-western fringes have been told to evacuate as emergency services battle what they say is a record event.”
Evacuation orders have been issued for several more areas.
Water was released from Sydney’s Warragamba Dam, which reached full capacity last night for the first time in 14 years.
NSW is experiencing all-time record rains.
Victoria, Australia. Deadly floods have forced the evacuation of patients from a hospital in northeastern Victoria.
At least one person was found dead from flood-related causes. The victim’s body was found at Majors Creek in Araluen, reports said.
The floods are said to be the region’s worst in living memory.

A state of emergency was declared in West Liberty where high winds destroyed a church and many buildings.
West Virginia. State of emergency has been declared in Marion County following torrential rains which left dozens of homes and businesses submerged under water.
Flash flooding also occurred across Harrison, Monongalia and Preston counties, reports said.

U.S. Midwest. Violent storms devastated communities in the Midwest and South, killing at least 12 people across three states, injuring hundreds and destroying or damaging up to a thousand homes.
Illinois. Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois has declared Harrisburg a disaster area, after an EF4 tornado blasted through the town (pop: ~ 9,000), killing at least 6 people, injuring more than 100 others and flattening entire blocks of homes.
Missouri. Governor Jay Nixon has declared Taney County a disaster area after an EF2 tornado with winds of about 130MPH touched down in Stone and Taney Counties in Missouri leaving a 22-mile path of destruction from the Kimberling City area to Branson.
The tornado impact injured 33 people and damaged/destroyed more than 100 homes and businesses in Branson, reports said.
About 20 of the more than 200 hotels in Branson have been badly damaged including a large motel, officials said.
Branson, dubbed a ‘music Mecca,’ is a major tourist destination with about 8 million visitors arriving each year.

Australia. About three-quarters of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) as well as parts of the two neighboring states of Victoria and the Northern Territory in the SE of the continent are affected by floods, reports said.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from Cooma, near the NSW Snowy Mountains, and Goulburn, midway between Sydney and Canberra.

Georgia, USA. EF1 tornado with winds of about 95mph (153 km/hr) struck Rome (Floyd County), Ga., killing at least one personand devastating a vast area.
The twister damaged about 100 homes in Kingston Highway area, reports said.
This was the second time in recent months that Floyd County was hit by a tornado.
Tornado touched down in Floyd County at about 10:15pm Wednesday, just west of the Maplewood subdivision in Rome, and traveled 3.25 miles, SPC said.

Southern U.S. Wintertime Tornado Outbreak
Several damage surveys were completed today in the wake of a tornado outbreak in Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama last night. Most of the damage surveyed so far has been rated EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating considerable damage with wind speeds reaching between 111 and 135 mph. However, the tornado that passed through Clay, Alabama, which is just north of Birmingham has been rated an EF-3. This tornado produced significant damage and was capable of wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. (Source: NWS)

Tornadoes have destroyed or damaged about 500 homes throughout the region and uprooted/snapped thousands of trees.
Other Global Disasters
Papua New Guinea (PNG). A massive landslide has completely buried two villages in PNG.
“The landslide is about a kilometer long and about 300 meters wide. There are people buried underneath and a number of them are from what I have heard, children.” Local MP Francis Potape has told Radio Australia.
At least 40 people are reportedly missing, reports said.
The landslide occurred near Exxon-Mobil’s liquefied natural gas project in the new Hela Province, blocking the main road and stopping work at the site and a nearby airfield.

North Carolina. At least one person died when tornadoes touched down in NC, Gov. Bev Perdue said.
“We have reports that tornadoes touched down in Randolph and Davidson counties [Wednesday] evening, causing a fatality in Davidson,” she said.
About a dozen people were injured and at least 3 dozen structures were damaged in the area.
Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Several EF 2 tornadoes reportedly touched down injuring 15 people across several counties, with Jones County being the worst-hit.
South Carolina. At least 3 people were killed and up to a dozen others injured when a tornado swept through a rural community about 20 miles south of Charlotte, N.C.
Georgia. At least one person was killed when a tree fell on a sport utility vehicle, a report said.
Alabama. “In eastern Alabama, a suspected twister splintered trees and demolished mobile homes at a pair of housing parks near the Auburn University campus,” the report said.
Tens of thousands of customers were left without power in Montgomery, the state capital.
Louisiana. A suspected tornado swept through Houma, southern Louisiana damaging several homes.
Pittsylvania, Virginia. Strong winds caused extensive roof damage to several building including the building housing the Unique Industries, according to reports received by SPC.

On May 24, 2011, deadly tornadoes claimed 18 lives in Oklahoma (10), Kansas (2), and Arkansas (6).
On May 26, 2011, deadly storms/tornadoes killed 3 people in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Marion County long-track EF5 of 27 April 2011 killed 78 people.
So far an estimated 323 tornadoes have occurred during May 2011 (3-year average: 322; decadal average: 298).

NWS records indicate 361 people were killed in April 2011, including 321 during the April 25-28 tornado outbreak, NOAA said.
Death toll from the devastating EF-5 tornado that struck Joplin on May 22 has risen to 132, after the remains of 6 more victims were identified, according to Joplin City Manager.
The twister, the deadliest single tornado to strike in the United States in 64 years, has also injured about 1,000 people.
Meanwhile, the officials said the number of people uncounted for had dropped to 156 [the number of missing was previously stated at about 1,500.]
Official also said the remains of only 19 of the victims had so far been identified and released to families, a report said.
“Many of the bodies are in such poor condition that officials said they are using fingerprints, medical records, distinctive tattoos, DNA and other methods to identify them.”

Joplin tornado store receipt flew 525 miles to Indiana
Meanwhile a Purdue University storm researcher reported that “a receipt from a tire store in Joplin, Mo., turned up 525 miles away on a front porch in north-central Indiana, a record distance for apparent tornado debris to travel,” according to a report.
“This paper traveled more than twice as far as the longest distance recorded for debris from a storm,” according to a professor of earth and atmospheric sciences and tornado expert. “The previous record was a canceled check that traveled 210 miles after the 1915 tornado in Great Bend, Kan.” Said the report.

Tornado Fatalities in Georgia
At least three people were killed when a tornado with winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour touched down in Atlanta, Georgia, reports said.

Wednesday storms spawned softball-sized hail in Georgia and damaging winds in upstate York, but no fatalities were reported, as of posting.
SPC received a total of 1,017 severe weather reports across 14 states on Wednesday (preliminary data) including 96 tornado reports. On Thursday there were 414 reports, including 5 tornadoes.

Joplin Tornado
Death toll from Joplin Tornado stands at 125, with about 1,000 injured. The number of missing since the tornado struck 5 days ago is shrouded in secrecy. The figure previously released by the authorities, and subsequently retracted, was 1,500. The actual figure for those unaccounted for may be closer to 1,000.

Death toll from Joplin tornado has risen to 126, as another body was found in the debris, and the number of missing was put at 232, officials said. “We will keep a relentless focus on the search, rescue and identification of those 232 people, and we will not rest until everyone has been accounted for, and that number is zero,” Governor Jay Nixon said.
Tornado Attacks on Tuesday
Death toll from tornadoes swept the Midwest on Tuesday night, has climbed to at least 16 people: 10 fatalities in Oklahoma, 4 in Arkansas and 2 in Kansas.

Flood Update
Major flooding is underway along Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, as well as in North Dakota. Flood warnings, advisories and watched have been issued for at least 25 states.
Meanwhile in England, strong winds and thunderstorms forced the cancellation of dozen of flights in and out of London’s Heathrow Airport, a report said.
Powerful and dangerous storm system will develop across the central and southern Plains: NWS
“A powerful and dangerous late-spring storm system will develop across the central and southern Plains today as an upper level system and a parade of supporting upper level disturbances advance out of the Intermountain West. The result will be strengthening low pressure over Kansas by this afternoon and evening that will then move slowly but steadily eastward toward Missouri by later Wednesday. The storm system will be accompanied by a classic dryline signature across the southern Plains with a strong frontal zone that will stretch across the Midwest and well to the East into the Northeast.” National Weather Service (NWS) reported.
Residents of the southern Plains and Ohio Valley are advised to prepare for severe weather, including the probability of large and powerful tornadoes through Wednesday.

Tornadoes reported in six states: Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Virginia, Texas and Arkansas.
At least 13 people were killed in 3 states (8 people in Oklahoma, 2 in Kansas, and 3 in Arkansas.)

The deadly storm struck Joplin at 17:30 local time (22:30 UTC) on Sunday May 22, 2010.
The tornado has killed at least 116 people.
Sunday tornado was the deadliest single tornado in 64 years.
Officials expect to find more bodies.
Some 2,000 buildings have been destroyed.
Many businesses, schools, churches and other buildings as well as hundreds of vehicles have also been destroyed.
About 500 people have been injured.
The tornado that struck Joplin left an estimated path of destruction about 6 miles (10km) long and 3/4 mile (1 km) wide.
The death and destruction in Joplin far surpasses the devastation caused by the tornado that struck Tuscaloosa, Alabama in April.
There’re reports of the deadly tornado packing wind speeds of about 200 miles an hour.
FIRE-EARTH believes the tornado would have registered at least EF4 (winds of 166 TO 200 MPH) on the Enhanced Fujita Tornado Scale (see bottom of the page).
In just 10 minutes the deadly tornado destroyed between 30 and 75 percent of the city, according to different reports.
St. John’s Regional Medical Center, the main local hospital, took a direct hit, which resulted in “extensive damage,” a hospital spokesman said. “The roof is gone. A lot of the windows are blown out.”
Debris from the hospital, including X-rays, were found as far as 110 miles away.
“Also destroyed were the hospital, the emergency services office, two fire houses, a nursing home, the Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Sonic, and Academy Sports and Outdoors stores. The water treatment plant and the sewage treatment plant were also heavily damaged. Mail delivery for the southern part of the city has been suspended for today.” SPC said.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across the central plains this afternoon and this evening as a strong storm system approaches. Thunderstorm initiation will likely occur late this afternoon approximately along a line stretching from Wichita, KS to Oklahoma City, OK, develop into a squall line and track eastward, reaching the Kansas/Missouri border by early this evening. These thunderstorms will impact the outlook area this evening and into the early overnight hours. Main severe threats with these storms will be damaging straight line winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center has the entire outlook area in a Slight Risk convective outlook for today and tonight. However, a High Risk convective outlook has been issued across southern and southeastern Kansas as well as north central and northeast Oklahoma. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through the day on Wednesday as this system tracks eastward over the area. However, the threat for severe weather is low. With the continued rounds of showers and thunderstorms impacting the region, there additionally is the threat for localized flash flooding and local streams and rivers to be on the rise due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall. Many of the ingredients for a severe weather outbreak appear to be coming together this afternoon and tonight. By the late afternoon, a dryline from western Oklahoma into South Central Kansas is expected to initiate severe thunderstorms. Additionally a warm front across the northern half of Kansas could focus more thunderstorm development. These storms will be capable of producing tornadoes, some potentially large, along with very large hail and damaging winds. The system will move north and east this evening but will still affect much of central and eastern Kansas into the overnight hours. A frontal boundary will remain stalled over northern Missouri and central Illinois through Wednesday night as a wound up area of low pressure to our west slowly approaches. This front will serve as a focus for several rounds of thunderstorms as well as maintaining the moist air over much of the bi-state region. While some thunderstorms are possible later today, thunderstorm chances will increase heading into tonight and Wednesday as the center of the main storm system approaches. Any thunderstorms that do form could become severe, but the greatest chance for severe weather will be Wednesday afternoon and evening where a widespread outbreak of severe thunderstorms is expected. National Weather Service said:
Another multi-state severe weather outbreak dropped 68 tornadoes on the central Plains, the Midwest and the western Great Lakes over the weekend, killing at least 90 people, according to NOAA Forecasters. To make matters worse, some of the same areas hit over the weekend could see repeated severe weather through Wednesday.
SPC logged more than 1,074 reports of tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds over the weekend.
